Postural Strain

Postural Strain

As a general rule, our bodies need and love movement. Any time we stay in one position for too long, it has a negative impact on our tissues. They experience constant strain without a break, and can thus start to become injured. Sitting is one of the worst culprits, because it puts a lot of load on our spines and the supporting soft tissues. Thus, desk jobs are often linked to neck or back pain and headaches.

Chiropractic care (link) and massage therapy are very effective in combatting these posture-related aches and pains. However, it is essential to do some work yourself to reduce the impact these static postures have on your body if you want to reduce how often you experience pain.

While there are better ways to sit (think upright and tall, with your knees apart), the best solution is to move more often. This means getting up from your desk at regular intervals (ideally every 20 minutes), and changing up how you’re sitting from time to time. It is also valuable to do exercises that counter the sitting posture, such as chest opening stretches or core strengthening. Our chiropractors can give you a variety of personalized tips to help you out with a movement program (link to exercise programs under services) that works for you.
